Welcome to Tampere - make yourself at home
Tampere emerged more than two centuries ago alongside rapids connecting two unspoiled lakes, in settings of great natural beauty.
In summer, the glitter of the lakes surrenders to the hue of the pale, nightless nights. In winter the waters are radiant with snow and ice and gentle in the dusk.
The city born from the power of the rapids is one and the same, but no longer comparable. Modern Tampere is a luminous cultural city of more than 200,000 inhabitants, one of Finland's largest urban centres and a world-class pioneer of many fields.
There are direct flights to Tampere from London, Dublin, Frankfurt, Bremen, Milan, Copenhagen and Stockholm. Tampere is also easy to reach by train from St Petersburg and Moscow. It takes 20 minutes to fly to Tampere from the capital Helsinki. The train makes the journey in an hour and a half, and the bus in two.
For culture enthusiasts
The international festivals of Tampere have long traditions and something new to offer each year. Tampere Film Festival in March, Tampere Vocal Music Festival and Pispala Schottische in alternating years in June, Tampere International Theatre Festival in August and Tampere Jazz Happening in November. Tampere Hall also offers events of international stature. The city centre is full of colour thanks to the Tampere Floral Festival in July and Tampere Illuminations bring light to darkness during the darkest time of the year.
Tampere is also known for its spectacular and unique museums. Vapriikki Museum Centre, Amuri Museum of Workers Housing, Tampere Art Museum, Lenin Museum and Mineral Museum will not let you down! History, the city's past, high-level Finnish and international art, the beauty of stone and a spectrum of colours.
Great vacations for families with children:
Särkänniemi Adventure Park is the favourite destination for children and young people. Särkänniemi's Aquarium, Planetarium, Dolphinarium, Sara Hildén Art Museum featuring international contemporary art and the Observation Tower with its revolving restaurant are open throughout the year. Dozens of fun rides and the children's zoo are open in the summer. The spas, Moominvalley, Museum of Dolls and Costumes, Spy Museum and Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame and other events aimed at children also make Tampere a popular destination for families with children.
Close to nature
Tampere is characterized by two large lakes, the rapids running through the city located between the lakes and the beautiful view across the lakes from the ridge. Nature is close by even in the city centre. In the winter you can enjoy cross-country skiing, ice-fishing and snowshoeing. Summer activities include fishing in the city centre by the Tammerkoski Rapids, lake cruises, water activities, hiking and saunas by the lake on a bright summer nights.
Spy Museum
Because of Finland's geo-political position between east and west our country has always been very active area of international espionage. For these reasons the first spy museum of the world was opened for public in Tampere in 1998
Knowledge is power. Secrets are hegemony.
